A long filter mixes ground waters from a wide depth range (Figure 2.2), and these waters may be substantially different in properties and composition. Quite thick sand horizon in Figure 2.3 may be an example. Its lower section is saturated with water with negative Eh and with Fe2+ content. Its upper section is saturated with water with positive Eh and with O2. In testing of this horizon with one filter the waters mix, and the following reaction occurs:
